My mom seems to not believe that doing general maintenance is not something you should do in your driveway (well on the street) she believes that you need to take it to a place like meineke or something, I merely changed my oil in the street, and now she has forbid me from doing it ever again, the reason she gives is it is just as expensive and takes less time to have it done at meineke (which is true) than it costs for the materials and you waste more time doing it (which is also true) to me, its not just about cost, its about learning how to do your own servicing of cars. But she does not get that at all.

Compare it to one of her hobbies.

Find an empty parking lot that doesn’t seem to see much use, load up tools in the car and take it there. Make sure you stick to general maintenance like fluid changes though; you don’t want to tackle a hard job and risk having to leave your car somewhere

She should worry about you in the street. One bad driver and her baby’s gone or pinned under a car. I used to change my oil in the street. Then had my foot almost ran over and car hit. But people at mienke don’t take the clsane care as you would. And they definitely don’t use the same quality of material. Unless you see them put in the high brand oi .

Tell her that it’s not just about changing the oil. Part of doing work to your own vehicle is so you can see what’s going on. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve changed my oil and noticed other things going on whether it be bushings worn out, tires cupping, or my transmission rear seal taking a vacation. These are things that somewhere else ‘might’ notice, but it’s not their car so they could care less.

I fight with my girlfriend over the same subject, but as many times as we’ve been burnt by shoddy workmanship at shops she’s starting to come around. Those places are just out for profit. Which means get a car in and out as quick as possible.

Honestly if it's the same price to have someone do it for you.....why NOT? I hate working on cars ever since I used to be a mechanic.

I think that I will just have to end up doing this, I’m not referring to like changing brakes, just like coolant and oil changes. If I was go try stuff like that, I would want someone who knows what they are doing to help me.

i happen to live in a city where its not very feasible to do any work on my car. so i tend to do standard maintenance at my family’s home which is a couple of hours away. my mother is similarly concerned for me.

she is mostly concerned for my safety crawling under the car. rightfully so, as a 4000 pound jaguar with about 4 inches of ground clearance wouldn’t pin me, but literally squash me like a bug. i’ve walked her through my safety protocols to assuage her fears, and also have resealed her driveway to hide all of the oil and other fluid stains the car has left there. probably have to do it again in the spring.

Do you have a friend with a garage? Or perhaps there’s one of those place near you where you can rent a service bay and do it yourself. Putting my 300D up on a lift and changing the differential oil was a lot of fun.

The eternal problem of arguing with your mother: she’s always right.
I change my brake pads because it saves me some money, I wanted to change my own oil, went for parts and realize It’s cheaper the other way, So I have someone do it. Just clean it obsessively like I do with a little brush and different liquids for plastic paint carpet wheels engine rubber and leather, you’ll get a lot of time with your car and you don’t even have to make a mess (I use dry wash products).

Doesn’t take much to be honest. A l0t of it is common sense. See something dripping oil, rubber shavings all over the place, or tires wearing uneven and you know something isn’t right. Shops won’t give you that respect. Especially the cheaper places like Jiffy Lube or Meineke.

We’ve had dealerships put on oil filters wrong. I mean I literally do not even trust most of my friends to touch my car without me double-checking their work. It’s nice to not be able to blame anyone but yourself. Trying to get a shop or dealership to accept blame is nigh impossible.

I’d add up all the money she has waisted on car repairs and services and show her.

Does she also neglect everything in her house?

Some people just aren’t car people they don’t understand anything about mechanical engineering, thats cool. Having a shit attitude about it like your mom, well not to be offensive but she is being a boob.

People who accomplish things for themselves are more likely to succeed, hell you could probably put your future kid through college by saving money from stealerships and shitcanics.

This is how you learn. (plus Youtube and a factory service manual. Even better is a friend who’s smarter than you.) But the serious point is learning by doing is a great method.

I started in your shoes - changing oil was about it. Then a few experiences just like 04sneaky and I thought “I can screw this up just like the professional mechanic did. Except I will have learned something and will not have paid for a screwing.”

Is it your car? You get to maintain it. It is NOT cheaper to do it at an oil place. you get to use the oil you want and especially the filter you want (Fram’s are BS) and if you buy them inn bulk then you save more money. I used to buy MANN filters by the case for my old Volvo and used Valvoline oil, something the oil places charged a ‘bottle fee’ for cause Valvoline wouldnt sell to them in bulk like the rest.
